What is A Hydrosol??

It’s been so long since I’ve written a Blog, I hope I remember how! But it’s time I share with my friends what The Creekside has been up to!

I’m going to start with a series of “Hydrosol Muses.” The beginning muse helps to explain the different Hydrosol Muses that will follow. These muses are about Hydrosols: Those beautiful magic waters that are created when distilling fresh, organic, therapeutic plants.

If you want to know how to use hydrosols for a specific condition, click on Hydrosol Uses & Properties to determine the best hydrosol for your situation.

A Hydrosol starts as a seed

It absorbs the sun and drinks up the rain

It frolics with the wind, sings with the birds,

sleeps with the moon

When Harvest arrives, it dances with the Alembic Still

to become one with Fire and Water

It rises as vapor and returns as liquid

—Ann Harmon, Artisan Distiller

Hydrosols are amazing liquids with taste, smell and therapeutic properties.

They are unique liquids produced by distilling fresh leaves, fruits, flowers, and other plant materials.

We use copper stills from Portugal to gently steam plant life,

then cool the steam down with a cold-water coil into incredible floral (or plant/herb/tree) water.

With similar therapeutic properties to essential oils, these aromatic waters are less concentrated.

Their aromas are soft and subtle when compared to their essential oil counterpart. The distillates  contain more of the plant acids than essential oils, making them skin friendly and more versatile.

They can be safely used on babies and animals.

The art of distilling is truly an adventure, getting to know each individual plant, how their cells break down to release the beneficial properties, at what temperature, during what duration of time, even their unique ph. It is a combination of science and intuition that creates quality hydrosols.
